Your small entry fees directly supports the reserve’s upkeep and conservation efforts. Facilities include scenic picnic spots with braai areas, clean toilets, a conference centre, and a boma for events. Spot wildlife like bushbuck, blue duiker, otters and diverse birds, or discover the fascinating ruins of the Umbilo Waterworks (a national monument built in 1887) – remnants of Durban’s early water supply system destroyed by a catastrophic flood in 1905.
Nestled in the heart of Pinetown, just a short drive from Durban airport, Paradise Valley Nature Reserve spans about 100-170 hectares of lush coastal forest, remnant grasslands, and the scenic Umbilo River. This peaceful oasis provides a perfect escape from city life, where visitors can immerse themselves in nature while exploring four well-marked hiking trails of varying difficulty: the gentle Waterfall Trail leading to a stunning cascade and viewing deck, the Duiker Trail with its historical stops, the Bushbuck Trail for a moderate challenge, and the steeper Dormouse Trail offering panoramic views.
Plan your visit wisely: gates open from 7:30am to 4pm daily. Bring comfortable shoes, water, and snacks, as there are no shops on-site. Grab a trail map at reception, and enjoy a refreshing, family-friendly adventure that blends nature, history, and relaxation.
